Kento Momota will retire after the Thomas Cup 2024.
Kento Momota is undoubtedly one of the greatest shuttlers to have graced the court. He is the first in the decade to have won two consecutive World Championship titles, a two-time Asia Champion, and a World Junior and Asia Junior Champion.
The only medal missing from his cabinet is an Olympic medal. In 2016, he was involved in a gambling scandal, which led to a ban from the National Federation, preventing him from participating in the Rio Olympics. Later, he suffered a serious accident before the Tokyo Olympics and was eliminated in the group stage. Subsequently, he did not qualify for the Paris Olympics.
In 2019, he won a total of 11 titles from 12 finals across 16 tournaments played—a record in men’s singles. After his return to international competition in 2017, up until his car accident in 2020, he played 200 matches with a 184-16 win-loss record. This impressive streak included 39 individual tournaments, where he reached 29 finals and won 24 titles. Additionally, he has won his first 17 matches in either the Thomas Cup or Sudirman Cup.
