Sumit Nagal last played at the ATP 1000 Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost against Holger Rune in three sets.

Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal has withdrawn from the upcoming 2024 ATP 1000 Rome Masters. In 2024, Nagal has been in decent form. In January, he defeated Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in straight sets to reach the second round of the Australian Open. With the win, Nagal became the first Indian to defeat a seeded player in a Grand Slam since 1989.

At the Dubai Tennis Championships, he won a set against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. Moreover, he defeated Matteo Arnaldi in his Round of 64 match at the Monte Carlo Masters. He also gave tough competition to former ATP World No. 7 Holger Rune in the second round and managed to win a set against him.

Interestingly, Sumit Nagal also became the first Indian after Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019 to secure a direct spot in the main draw of the French Open. However, the Indian tennis star has been out of action since then.

Nagal stated that he has decided to take two or three weeks to recover from the fatigue and exhaustion he has accumulated from constant travel and regular competitions. However, the 26-year-old has recently withdrawn from the 2024 Rome Masters. Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin has been named as Nagal’s replacement in the ATP 1000 event.

The Rome Masters is the last major event before the 2024 Roland Garros. The tournament helps tennis stars build momentum ahead of the big stage. However, missing the ATP 1000 event would be part of the Indian tennis star’s strategy. Nagal also uploaded a short video clip of his preparation on social media. Here is the video:
