IPL 2024: LSG coach provides massive update on speedster Mayank Yadav's injury

Mayank Yadav returned after three weeks only to suffer another injury scare.

Mayank Yadav, who had returned to action in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), after missing a few matches against Mumbai Indians (MI), suffered another injury scare. Yadav had made his IPL debut against Punjab and in his first three matches, picked 6 wickets and impressed one and all with his pace.

Mayank Yadav made his IPL debut for LSG against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and stunned everyone with his speed. He bowled the fastest at 155.8 kph against PBKS and averaged more than 150 kph during his 24-ball spell. He took three wickets and was named Player of the Match.

He repeated the feat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), taking three inexpensive wickets, including one from Glenn Maxwell and a stunning clean bowl from Cameron Green. In this course, he also delivered the fastest ball in IPL 2024, registering 156.7 kph. This effort earned him his second Player of the Match award in a row.

However, in his third match, he suffered an abdominal strain and was sidelined for a few matches.

Mayank began in a dramatic manner when he came in to bowl after the powerplay, and his first delivery, at 144.1kph, smacked Nehal Wadhera in the helmet after taking off from a short distance. He also went past the 150kph mark later in the over.

Mayank bowled his first three overs against Mumbai for 31 runs while increasing the tempo before being assigned the 19th over. His first ball made its way through Mohammad Nabi and clattered into the stumps, but the quick bowler left the field, leaving Naveen-Ul-Haq to finish the over. Mayank appeared to be in no pain when he came off, but was later replaced by the Impact Player in Arshin Kulkarni during the innings break.

Now LSG coach Justin Langer has given an update on Mayank Yadav’s injury scare. He said that the youngster still has soreness in the same area that kept him out of action for over three weeks. Langer further said the young pacer will also undergo a scan.

“Looks like he’s sore in the same spot, his rehab’s been absolutely perfect, he bowled pain-free in the last few weeks or so, and he’s looked in great condition. We’ll have a scan and we’ll find out tomorrow,” Langer told broadcasters.

Meanwhile, LSG captain KL Rahul said: “I have not really spoken to him. He had slight pain in his side and after the first ball, he said ‘thoda dukh raha hai’ (there was a bit of pain). Thought there was no need to risk it, he is still a young lad. It is not just the pace. This game, he showed he has more skills than bowling 150-plus. The more he plays, the more he will learn when to bowl what. Right now, we have given him a free hand to just enjoy himself and bowl what he wants.”

21-year-old Mayank had played just one first-class match, 17 List A matches, and 10 T20s before making his IPL debut.
