"If I could have played till...," KL Rahul opens up about his regret during World Cup 2023 final knock
KL Rahul scored a very slow half-century in the final of World Cup 2023.
In 2023, Indian cricket supporters were filled with elation and hope as their side completely dominated the One-Day International World Cup. The skills of their players and the anticipation of winning the trophy added to the excitement with each game. India appeared to be on the cusp of greatness with their dominant performances until the final of the tournament. Unfortunately, a terrible turn of events occurred in the final. They were devastated when they lost the final match to Australia. In those final moments, the stadium was filled with a sense of surprise as players and fans with looks of confusion, experienced the heartbreak of a shattered dream.
It was up to the Indian batters to put up a decent score against the crafty Australian bowlers on a sluggish pitch at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. The Indian batters struggled to find their rhythm against the crafty bowling attack.
KL Rahul faced criticism for his poor performance, he scored the slowest half-century in the 2023 World Cup. He caught everyone’s attention when he managed to score 66 runs off of 107 balls. As the match progressed, Indian supporters became increasingly dissatisfied with watching their team struggle against their biggest rivals on the grandest stage.
KL Rahul talks about his regret
KL Rahul, in an interaction with Ravichandran Ashwin, finally opened up on that disastrous afternoon. He spoke about his innings and the dilemma that he was facing at that moment: whether to play out Mitchell Starc or go for his shots when it was reversing. He added that if he could have stayed till the end, India would have scored 30 more runs and could have managed to get their hands on the World Cup.
“The World Cup final against Australia, I was stuck in the moment, whether to take down Starc or just play him as it was reversing, bowling at a tough angle – in that confusion I ended up nicking it – if I could have played till the end, it could have been 30 more runs and probably World Cup in our hands – that is what I regret,” KL Rahul told R Ashwin on his show Kutti Stories.
