The Indian Super League (ISL) has become a breeding ground for talented foreign footballers. These players bring international experience, flair, and a winning mentality, significantly impacting the league’s overall quality. This trend is particularly evident on the biggest stage – the ISL final.
Here, we delve into the top five foreign players who have graced the ISL final the most times throughout the league’s history. From goal-scoring heroes to defensive stalwarts, these individuals have etched their names into ISL folklore with their consistent presence on the grandest stage.
5. Dimitri Petratos -2
Dimitri Petratos, a star forward for Mohun Bagan, has been a force in the ISL for two consecutive seasons. In 2022-23, he led his team to victory against Bengaluru FC in the finals, scoring two crucial penalties (though the win came via penalty shootout). He continued to shine in the following season, bagging the ISL Player of the League award despite Mohun Bagan losing the finals to Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake Stadium.
4. Juanan – 3
Juanan, a defender known for his height, played for various clubs across Europe and the USA before finding success in the Indian Super League. During his ISL stint, he won the championship twice – once with Bengaluru FC in 2018-19 defeating Goa, and later in 2021 with Hyderabad FC against Kerala Blasters in a penalty shootout. Interestingly, his first ISL final with Bengaluru FC ended in a defeat against Chennaiyin FC (2017-18).
3. Tiri – 3
Tiri claimed his inaugural ISL title in 2016 with ATK, triumphing over Blasters in a penalty shootout. Following a stint at Jamshedpur FC spanning three seasons, he returned to Kolkata, joining Mohun Bagan for the 2020-21 season, though they succumbed to defeat in the ISL final against Mumbai City FC. In a free transfer move on July 6, 2023, Tiri penned a one-year deal with the Islanders, playing a pivotal role in securing the 2023-24 ISL Trophy as one of the standout defenders of the season.
2. Hugo Boumous – 3
Hugo Boumous proved his championship pedigree by winning the title twice. He clinched victory with Mumbai City FC in 2021 and repeated the feat in 2022-23 with Mohun Bagan, where he was a fan favourite for his skills and clutch performances in big matches.
1. Roy Krishna – 3
Roy Krishna debuted in the 2019-20 ISL season with ATK, netting 15 goals and clinching the ISL Trophy. The 2020-21 season, amidst the Covid Bio-Bubble, saw him lead Mohun Bagan to the final, earning the Player of the League award despite their loss to Mumbai City FC in the final. Joining Bengaluru FC, he secured the Durand Cup in his debut season but faced another final defeat, this time against Mohun Bagan in a penalty shootout.
